Cyber Fraud Prevention Tips

The month of March is Fraud Prevention Month, and as such we’d like to provide you with a few tips on how to stay cyber safe:

Dangers of Public Wi-Fi
Connecting to public Wi-Fi can you leave you vulnerable to hackers intercepting and reading your communications; this is known as a “man-in-the-middle” attack. Always use a VPN (virtual private network) when connecting to public Wi-Fi. A VPN will encrypt your internet connection, protecting your private data.

Use Long Passphrases for Passwords
Adopt the use of long passphrases for your passwords. Passphrases are longer, more complex and can be easier to remember. Passphrases are also harder for hackers to crack. Here’s an example of a passphrase password: WeInsureYourProperty1983

Secure Online Transactions
Before completing an online transaction, look at the website address bar. You will want to see the website address begin with “https” – the “s” means that the communication has been encrypted. You can also look for a lock icon.

Software Updates and Patches
Don’t hesitate to update your software when your device prompts you to. Software updates and patches can fix vulnerabilities that are exploited by hackers.
